Women’s films in Italy 1965-2015

A cinematic archive for the future

Even though women have always made films in italy, the lack of access to funding and visibility has been exacerbated by the erasure of their work in film historiography and discourse. Measures against gender inequality in the Italian film sector would therefore require not only undoing the erasure of women’s work historically and in the present, but actively facilitating access to women’s filmmaking. This project seeks to establish a tangible record of women’s audiovisual production in italy, as a practical tool against discrimination; but also to function as an ally to ongoing research and activism that is working towards creating a renewed Italian film sector, one that recognises that it has thus far consistently failed to speak to large segments of its intended audience.
